Sepia Watercolour Family Portrait From Old Photographs

Sepia Watercolour Family Portrait From Old Photographs

A few years ago I bumped into a Primary School teacher, who taught me when I was 9/10 years old. Since then we have seen one another quite often at various functions and events. Recently She asked if I could help. Her family, apparently, had significant milestones in their lives approaching, and she wanted something to capture her grandchildren all together at that moment in time forever.  Having seen my artwork at several exhibitions, she asked if I would do a ‘Timeless’ portrait of them from photographs. The idea was for her to present the portrait as a surprise at a family event. She hasn’t brought it back, so, I assume it went down okay!!!

‘Sleepy Monkey and Wooden Duck’

Above is another in my series of “On a Ledge” paintings. As random things go that live on a window ledge I must say I do like Sleepy Monkey, this painting is the second he got to pose for!  The light, shade and reflections in this picture worked surprisingly well in the watercolours. As the main focus was centred around painting art for children rooms’ in this series, I have been surprised too by the number of adults who have shown much interest in them.

Here is how the idea arose for “On a Ledge Series” for those who have not seen others in the range

Bored and uninspired one day, I stood in my kitchen wondering what I could draw? Whilst wondering I absent mindedly started tidying and rearranging things on the ledge. I’m not one for nice pot ornaments, rather have slightly wacky or weird decorative things around! So, as I now had a disarrayed pile of things I had moved and a clean window ledge – The idea struck me. I could use it as a little staging area for a series of still life pictures!!!

Musicians in Watercolour

This is almost a small mini series of watercolours I did concentrating on musicians I know, with their instruments. All the paintings were done from photographs I took. Several of the images below have their own separate posting in Portraits  (As they are of my Son! One of him with his violin, his main instrument and one on his saxophone, I even had him pose with a guitar so I could paint it – even though he doesn’t play one!! – playing in his younger years!!!) or Street Art

As everything seemed to be frozen in time in this scene, I decided to post it in Still Life. This painting was done from a photograph my Daughter sent to me, whilst studying at Worcester College, Oxford, it is of her friends from Oxford and Cambridge universities. It seems a simply idyllic moment of student life, sitting on the banks of the river discussing maybe their subjects, life or even what budget they have left to buy dinner that night – Who knows!?

'Sunrise At The Barn'

‘Sunrise At The Barn’

This watercolour was more of a doodle than based on any actual scene. I was playing around with colours which seem to arise on a cold misty dawn. In my imagination this is how the painting played out, connecting everything together by using the same colours throughout, from the sky, the trees across the barn and down to the ground. The pathway between the barbed wire fencing I added later to give the painting more perspective. Quite pleased with my imaginary doodle!

The idea for “On a Ledge Series” was born.  Above is one version of ‘Jack and Jill’, two little rag dolls my daughter brought home from a trip abroad. This particular one is done in watercolour. Other posts of Jack and Jill for the future will be a version in soft pastel and one in oils.

‘Cycling in Snowy Macclesfield’

I have painted two versions of this scene, both in watercolour. This is the ‘Snowy’ version, where I had great fun imagining and creating the landscape with snow on it. The other version is with a lush green landscape. (See ‘Cycling in Macclesfield’ – also in Landscapes)

‘Busking in Bolton’

A few years ago I was Exhibiting my Art, along with other Artists, In a Street Art Exhibition, when I managed to capture this moment on camera.

The violinist is my Son, who came along to offer me support in the form of Busking. As I turned around from my stall, I noticed he was starting to draw a small crowd of appreciative listeners. I quickly took a photograph, capturing The Moment!

This Watercolour is the result of that Scene.

Family portrait - looking back in time

Family portrait – looking back in time

As an artist- even though I am self taught, I love recreating old photographs onto canvas. The styles of the clothes and hair gave it away as being from another era. Also, from just being an old damaged scrap of a picture, I can enlarge to any given size and take away the years of damage. Recreating memories on a larger scale to enjoy once more!
