Cycling in Snowy Macclesfield

‘Cycling in Snowy Macclesfield’

I have painted two versions of this scene, both in watercolour. This is the ‘Snowy’ version, where I had great fun imagining and creating the landscape with snow on it. The other version is with a lush green landscape. (See ‘Cycling in Macclesfield’ – also in Landscapes)

My Little ones!

‘My Little ones!’

I had an idea one day, to dress my children up in old fashioned clothes.  We had a lot of fun as they ‘posed’ for photographs in flat cap and hat around the house. A few years later whilst looking over old photographs, I settled on the picture above, even though my Son was pulling a funny face, and decided to paint it in watercolour. The small photograph in the bottom corner is the actual one I worked from.

It's ALL about the Results!

It’s ALL about the Results!

This is a picture of True Happiness. My Daughter a few years ago after She received her A Level results – 5 Grade A’s! She had only planned to take four exams originally to try for Oxford University, though after we went on an Open Day, the Professors told her Physics would also be an advantage. So unperturbed she went back to College and told them she wanted to do physics as well. They told her, “Unfortunately you don’t have any time on your timetable to do it at College” Again, not put off by this, She asked them to put her in for the exam. She was going to teach herself A Level Physics. Which she did, AND got the highest mark in the year at her College. We were so proud of her, as we still are Today with all her achievements.

‘Poppies and Forget-me-nots’

This Watercolour picture of Poppies was done from my garden, where the Wild, Orange Poppies nestled happily within a carpet of fresh blue Forget-me-nots. The thin papery texture of the flowers allows to sunlight to almost pass through.

Mayday Festivities - Oxford University

‘Mayday Festivities’ – Oxford University

Whilst my Daughter was studying at Worcester College she would tell me of the Fantastic atmosphere in Oxford when it was Mayday. There would be Artists, Musicians, Dancers and all kinds of Street activities. including dancing around a Maypole. Often the partying would go on through the night. She sent me some photographs. This Watercolour above is depicting one of the scenes!

After I had finished painting, I stood back and noticed I had omitted to put the young girl’s legs in the painting. With my paint brush hovering ready to paint them in, I Stopped. I realised it actually gave something more to the picture by the legs absence. Like an ethereal figure floating off to the sound of the musician’s music!!

Getting one portrait right is hard enough!!!

Getting one portrait right is hard enough!!!

When my Friend asked if I would do a portrait of her Daughter and Friend together as a special 18th Birthday present, I agreed. Then, she asked if I would do it as ‘Now AND Then’ as they had been friends since the very first day of school. I think I held my breath the whole time I was painting it. Starting one portrait over again is hard enough to bear should anything go wrong, but when I got to the third face I was terrified I might make a mistake. Thankfully all went to plan. This was the finished result. (See thumbnails of the photographs I worked from below)

'Brothers'

‘Brothers’

This Watercolour painting was to recreate an old black and white photograph which was quite damaged with age. Instead of painting in black and white I felt a warmer sepia tone would complement the scene much better. I was very happy with the outcome!
