Musicians in Watercolour

Musicians in Watercolour

This is almost a small mini series of watercolours I did concentrating on musicians I know, with their instruments. All the paintings were done from photographs I took. Several of the images below have their own separate posting in Portraits  (As they are of my Son! One of him with his violin, his main instrument and one on his saxophone, I even had him pose with a guitar so I could paint it – even though he doesn’t play one!! – playing in his younger years!!!) or Street Art

That’s My Boy!

Around the age of 13 Years, My Son decided to learn another instrument. Whilst deciding which one to choose, one of my Daughter’s friends offered to teach him to play the Saxophone. After considering, that would be okay, maybe?! He had about six lessons with my Daughter’s friend, decided he liked it – And there was no looking back. Within five years he had risen through the ranks of different bands to become the Lead Sax player in Our Home Town’s Youth Concert Band and Youth Jazz orchestra.  Within four and a half years from start he had reached, With Merit, Grade 8 Jazz on his Saxophone. (He was also Lead Violinist in our Town’s Youth Orchestra, a Member of The Halle Youth Orchestra for four years and attained Grade 8 Distinction on his Violin. See another Watercolour portrait of ‘My Little Boy‘)

Mayday Festivities - Oxford University

‘Mayday Festivities’ – Oxford University

Whilst my Daughter was studying at Worcester College she would tell me of the Fantastic atmosphere in Oxford when it was Mayday. There would be Artists, Musicians, Dancers and all kinds of Street activities. including dancing around a Maypole. Often the partying would go on through the night. She sent me some photographs. This Watercolour above is depicting one of the scenes!

After I had finished painting, I stood back and noticed I had omitted to put the young girl’s legs in the painting. With my paint brush hovering ready to paint them in, I Stopped. I realised it actually gave something more to the picture by the legs absence. Like an ethereal figure floating off to the sound of the musician’s music!!

This is a picture of my son performing as Leader of A String Quartet several years ago. I captured the moment not just for the String players, but also, the architecture and statue in the background. The Quartet were performing  in order to raise money for charity.

My little boy!

My little boy!

My son was one of the first watercolour portraits I had ever painted. it was done to commemorate him gaining a place in the Halle Youth Orchestra, playing in first violins, at the age of fourteen. A VERY PROUD PARENT MOMENT!!! I was also quite pleased with the portrait too.

(Also see Watercolour Portrait of ‘That’s My Boy’ with some of His Achievements)
