Worcester College Ducks, Oxford University

For those who have browsed my LANDSCAPE SECTION, You may recognise this scene. In Landscapes it was done in soft pastels which gives it a real feeling of softness, This is the preliminary sketch for that artwork. The drawing was done from a photograph taken whilst visiting my Daughter, who was studying for her Master’s Degree at the time. The ducks at Worcester College are considered very important and are contained within the College Emblem.

This painting of a Local Scene is of a different angle to another post I have made in Landscapes, an oil painting called ‘Hidden Harwood’. The steps and tree in the centre of the picture are indeed the same. This is the only painting I have ever used acrylics for! Whilst the overall picture is okay, it is not the mediums I would have chosen. The church hall sat on the hill is where I meet with other artists. Their idea was for us all to paint the same scene as vividly as possible – in acrylics, which is what the majority there work in. It has got to be the fastest painting I have ever done, from initial sketch to completion in twenty minutes. Basically painted faster than the paint could dry!!!

Previously in Pen and Ink I featured a simple black and white sketch of the scene above. Wanting to take the illustration further I redid the scene coloured with vibrant inks. I was rather pleased with the result!

‘On the Canal – In Colour’

For those who have already seen the first post of this scene in ‘Pen and Inks’ just in black and white, I thought it might be nice to show you another version of the same coloured with inks. Not a medium I have worked much  with over the years, though every now and then I have another practice as above. I must admit I am always really excited by their vibrancy, (thinking about it, I really should have another practice – A girl can always do with a little excitement!)

Posh Peg Pouches!

Posh Peg Pouches!

This idea came about after another bored moment. I sketched some simple designs for what could be on a washing line, other than just clothes. After lots of scribbling, and many little picture scenes I set about cutting all the little pieces for my peg bag pictures out of felt. I then hand appliquéd all the small bits to form little garden scenes with a washing line. As you can see there are some with birds on the line, others with soft toys, Squirrels, little lady and little pieces of clothing.  Another fun touch was adding tiny little craft pegs to the line and giving the sense of a lawn and flowers below by stitching in green embroidery silk and sewing on old buttons as flowers. Finally,  I inserted a little coat hanger. See below for other designer ‘Posh Peg Pouches’!

'Unwanted Items to be left on step!'

‘Unwanted Items to be left on step!’

Whilst practising with my pen and inks a few years ago, I sketched this little imaginary scene. Initially is was meant to be nothing more than that. Though as I drew little bits here and there and then added the little girl,  the scene became more thought provoking to me. I had already put the notice on the door and the sad little teddy, parcel and shoe on the step but thought it should have something more – That is when I loosely sketched the small figure.  The slight tilt on her head made me wonder; Is she sad to leave her Teddy? Has she not read the sign on the door? Is she just sitting there by accident? Or indeed, does She feel unwanted? After I added coloured ink, I showed the sketch to my children for their opinions, not so much for the subject but the practice with the inks. They were both deeply touched with the little sad scene and they had their thoughts on it too. In the end this little picture drew so much emotional thought and discussion that I decided to frame it – Surely, whether good or bad,  that is what art is all about!?!

Splashes of Red in a Sepia Street

Splashes of Red in a Sepia Street

This is a little village Scene of Chapeltown main street. It is very quaint and every Summer the whole village have flower boxes and planters outside their houses. Many locals drive through just to see the beautiful display – “Chapeltown in Bloom!”

I wanted this little street picture to have a timeless feel and so painted in oil sepia tones. To achieve this I had to visit the village over twenty times to sketch it, as nowadays everyone has a car and the village only seems to exist from the middle of the bottom windows upward. After many, many sketches (Whilst cars were in different places along the road) I managed to get enough of the pavement line to construct the contours of the Village.

As a finishing touch I added some warmth back into the scene with the red flowers. This has been one of the most talked about paintings in local exhibitions – Especially as people can see the street now, as it used to be – Without Cars!

These two pencil drawings of Snowshill, in the Cotswolds were done from old photographs taken on family holidays. This is a beautiful, tiny, village in the Cotswolds. It is almost just one street wrapped around a church and graveyard. Below is another pencil sketch of Snowshill Church.

Is it wise to stay awake ALL night?

This is one of my unique cushion covers with an owl I designed, no two are ever the same. Maybe the buttons are different or the fabric cut to different sizes in the borders, or stars in different place, I never entirely or exactly  reproduce a handmade piece.

I hand appliquéd pieces of felt onto a navy blue spotty cotton fabric, which gives a good night time feel then added felt stars and moon. Hand quilted it simply and added old buttons for a finishing touch!

Poppies on Parade

Poppies on Parade

This is an Oil painting I did of My Garden Poppies. It would have been so beautiful if they had really all flowered together like this. Sadly however, not so. Instead I amalgamated several weeks worth of My Garden Poppies flowering, using photographs, as they each had their ‘perfect moment’ Once I was happy I had just the images I wanted, I combined them together in a sketch. Almost like arranging soldiers for inspection. Hence I titled the finish painting “Poppies on Parade”!
