Not forgetting their bunny tails

Not forgetting their bunny tails

Over the last week or so I have been making things for the Easter Season. As a crafter you really need to be a few steps ahead of upcoming events to have enough stock for craft fairs and the like. So when I get an idea I certainly seem to go full steam ahead, and those who know my site, it means I never can stop at just one, always wanting to explore other possibilities, using different materials. Look out for a couple more bunny posts after this one!

This little pair were my first creations from the pattern I made, which is quite similar to the one I used for my penguins and snow men/women at Christmas time. Using quite a stiff cotton canvas material, which I would normally use when making bags/totes, but as I had a few pieces that were too small for that, they seemed perfect for experimenting. Whilst rummaging through my little scrap pieces looking for some linen to make their clothes, I found a small preprepared patchwork square that had been left over from a previous project, but it was just the perfect colour combination to match the canvas and the felt I had stitched on for their faces. So Mrs. Bunny was sorted! After a bit more routing I found a nice bit of lined to make Mr. Bunny a little jacket, I even inset some shirt sleeves and gave him a matching neckerchief.

Then I noticed it…

…I had trimmed off the salve edge of the linen and when I turned it over it had the words, ‘Made in England’ printed there, too good to pass up as that is where I made them, I thought. Oh my! I was so excited it was perfect to make Mrs Bunny an apron.

After a few finishing touches of adding tiny seed beads for their eyes and stitching little noses I found a few little buttons for their clothing and sowed a little felt base for each of them to stand on. As ever I have handmade and designed these little characters and no too will ever be the same, the little touches of tilting their faces or not making them too perfect all gives them their own character and personalities, which is what I love so much about creating and crafting, always making something original.

Now they have hopped over to My Etsy Shop! Carens canvas and craft in plenty of time to be a seasonal gift or an all year round  pair of decorative bunnies.

Recycling Old Buttons

Recycling Old Buttons

Having acquired probably thousands of old buttons over the years, my main idea is to give them all, at some point, a second chance. Recycling them, usually not in the way they were designed to be used, as fasteners on clothing, but as decorative and creative pieces of artwork. Also in this section, of Button Craft, you will see my original idea of creating little character “Button Craft – ‘Button Buddy’ Brooches – Recycling Old Buttons ” as Brooches and on Button Craft – My ‘Button Buddy’ Characters. This little wooden box has been covered with what we now consider to be out of fashion old brass and pewter buttons. On their own they seem worthless, not so, now arranged as decorative and beautiful on this little trinket box!

Below are other little trinket boxes covered in Recycled Old Buttons

Button Craft - Decorative Wreaths

Button Craft – Decorative Wreaths

These little wreaths (Approx 9″ diameter) made from natural twigs were decorated simply by recycling old bits and bobs out of my eclectic array of what some might call ‘junk’. I have many tubs of old buttons, bits of jewellery – most of which are broken or incomplete pieces and miles of ribbons – which are all in little bits too!

Firstly I wrapped around several different, coordinating, varying width ribbons. I then spent a few happy hours routing in my tins until I had found just the old buttons and bits to match up with the ribbon decorated wreaths. Next I attached all the decorative bits using florists wire. As a finishing touch I twisted a long length of embroidery silk to make a twisted hanging loop!

‘Doorstop Dumpy’ – Can I Have a Hug?

This is another of My ‘Doorstop Dumpies’ I designed the pattern for. This little tartan pig will certainly hold back any standard door. For interest I made him  a flat cap, and added some coordinating ribbon around his tummy and as a tie. The final touches were adding old buttons for a snout, eyes and colourful decoration and a brass ring on his nose!

As ever no two doorstops are ever the same making them unique!

Frog ‘Doorstop Dumpy’

I have been designing and creating patterns for what I have called my ‘Doorstop Dumpies’. Sizeable and weighty little decorative characters for a practical purpose. Each and everyone – UNIQUE!

Meet my green, spotty, cotton fabric, frog ‘Doorstop Dumpy’ creation – Fredrick. Decorated with old buttons for eyes and around his waist trim, this rather handsome chap, dressed to the nines, has collar and velvet bow tie. He’s quite literally dressed to impress as he holds open the door for you whilst greeting you with a red ribbon rose!

A selection of My ‘Button Buddies’

Breathing new life into old buttons! Required; Lots of imagination, some ‘bits and bobs’ a glue gun and off I went – like a mad woman creating little ‘Button Buddy’ Characters. Without realising how many I had made I decided to name them all with a name beginning with ‘B’. eg, Barney, Boris, Bertha etc, etc. I very soon ran out of names beginning with ‘B’ so had to reuse names. HOWEVER no two ‘Button Buddies’ were ever made the same, ALL totally unique!!! To illiterate even further, i put brooch pins on them and made them into ‘Button Buddy Brooches’. To this day I have never seen anything similar when looking at button craft pages! I was really pleased with my new creation!
