Dave’s Dog!

This pastel pet portrait of our friend, Dave’s, Springer Spaniel was done from a photograph he let me borrow in order to add to my portfolio of animal pictures. The blanket is a creation of mine which I have added to a few of my pet portraits, making them I think, more distinctively mine. Deb’s Dog

This dog has a liking for chunks of wood rather than soft toys! I was very pleased with the soft fuzzy pastel effect on the dogs face and head, it reminded me of my first dog, Sandy, a Golden Labrador I had as a child.

This portrait was almost as hard to do as a black pet. He was so vividly red in colour on the photograph it was hard to see any definition. Thankfully he turned out just fine! A Very pleasing end result I think!

Dave’s Dogs

Dave who is a friend and former schoolmate of my husband was so excited when he got his two new dogs. They were sisters from the same litter. After some sisterly rivalry they settled down ‘perfectly’. Kindly, he sent some photographs of them for me to work from and add to my portfolio of pet portraits.

This pastel portrait of my Neighbour’s dog Spike was done at the same time as the Cat portrait Tash-ti (See Tash-ti in Animal Portraits too). Drawing a Black animal always seems more challenging to define its detailing than other coloured pets. This was also made more challenging by the fact I only had an old photograph in black and white to work from.

Molly

Whilst drawing this portrait of Molly I was quite aware that her face on the photograph is quite twisted, around the muzzle and forehead region, and I had to resist the temptation to ‘straighten’ her features. Firstly had I done so, it would therefore NOT have been a true representation of Molly, and secondly, THE very reason Molly was bought by her owners as a pup was the fact they felt drawn to her because of her slightly sad disposition in the features of her face. Not only were Molly’s owners pleased with the portrait, they were literally overcome with emotion as they think she is just perfect!

My puppy – Peppy

This was the first picture I did of our new puppy -Peppy, when he was about six months old. He is a very well pedigree d Weimaraner, with his sister in the same litter winning shows in Ireland and his mother, Posh also highly acclaimed as a champion dog. The pastel truly made this picture spring to life with a feeling of soft, short haired fuzziness. I was really happy with it and it has always been my most favourite pet portrait ever!

My Friend’s Dog – Poppy

I am always on the lookout to broaden my portfolio with new pet portraits. Once again I used one of my favourite mediums – pastel, to create a simple soft textured animal likeness. Poppy proved to be a lovely subject. I gave my friend the portrait as a present for her encouragement in showing me basic patchwork techniques.

 I did this pet portrait sadly after the pets had passed away and only had small sections of dogs on different photographs to work from. Meaning I had to compose the portrait as seen above. The portrait now has pride of place in my friend’s home where it instils fond memories
