'Poppy Perfection'

‘Poppy Perfection’

In this painting the main thing I wanted to convey to the canvas was the transparency of the the petal with the sunlight shining through in the early morning. The reason I titled it ‘Poppy perfection’ was that I caught this flower on photograph at the pinnacle of its existence. It really was a good year in my garden for poppies (See also my other paintings of poppies especially Oil Painting – Still Life – ‘Poppies on Parade’ which was a collection of flowers from my garden) But I still think this was the most perfect and beautiful poppy I think I have ever see. As if to highlight that fact I painted the background quite abstractly to show the comparison. Whilst the background flowers in my opinion needed to be there for the composition of the still life I didn’t want their distraction from the main focus of the Poppy!

This simple watercolour was done from a photograph I took Whilst on a day trip to the Cumbrian countryside. I had never been here before and nearly missed the bridge, just at the last minute I escaped from the car (after my husband had stopped!) and poked my way through the bushes to take this very angled photograph.

Dave's Dog!

Dave’s Dog!

This pastel pet portrait of our friend, Dave’s, Springer Spaniel was done from a photograph he let me borrow in order to add to my portfolio of animal pictures. The blanket is a creation of mine which I have added to a few of my pet portraits, making them I think, more distinctively mine. Other pictures with this blanket can also be seen in Animal Portraits, they are;

Bracco Italiano Dogs – Pastel Pet Portrait,

Pastel Pet Portrait of My Neighbour’s Cat

Cat – Pastel portrait

Of course there are other pet portraits to be seen also drawn without the blanket!

Worcester College Ducks, Oxford University

For those who have browsed my LANDSCAPE SECTION, You may recognise this scene. In Landscapes it was done in soft pastels which gives it a real feeling of softness, This is the preliminary sketch for that artwork. The drawing was done from a photograph taken whilst visiting my Daughter, who was studying for her Master’s Degree at the time. The ducks at Worcester College are considered very important and are contained within the College Emblem.

As everything seemed to be frozen in time in this scene, I decided to post it in Still Life. This painting was done from a photograph my Daughter sent to me, whilst studying at Worcester College, Oxford, it is of her friends from Oxford and Cambridge universities. It seems a simply idyllic moment of student life, sitting on the banks of the river discussing maybe their subjects, life or even what budget they have left to buy dinner that night – Who knows!?

' High Street, Broadway - Cotswolds'

‘ High Street, Broadway – Cotswolds’

Broadway in the Cotswolds – drawn in pencil from a photograph, taken on one of our many holidays there when our children were younger. The architecture is many hundreds of years old in this part of the country and I wanted to capture it in a medium, as if it could have been drawn at any time, from two hundred years ago to the present day.

Compare the pencil drawing to the same image done in

Oil Painting of Local Landscape

Oil Painting of Local Landscape ‘Along the Lane’ in Oils

For those of you who have been through ALL my landscapes so far, You may think I have repeated this scene. True, but, though the previous post was done in Soft Pastel and mounted it measures only 20″ x 16″, this picture above is in fact much larger. It was done on 100 x 80 cm box canvas and painted in oils. I tried to recreate the scene as closely as possible to the photograph I had taken (Though I did take artistic licence and added some colourful foliage at the bottom of the railings – with the canvas so large the railings seemed to overtake the landscape too much).  By use of the oils I wanted to convey light, shadows, colours and textures but at the same time convey also the tranquillity  It is a scene I have recreated several times in different mediums. As this version was the largest, I managed to get more detail in. I love the colours and reflections on the water. From the cottage gardens in the rear of the picture, right across the fishing lodge in the foreground there seems to be an equal share of colours, bringing the whole picture together!

This landscape, done in soft pastel, was done from a photograph I’d taken on a beautiful Autumn day. The colours were superb and I think I have just about done them justice in this landscape of a local countryside scene!

My Little ones!

‘My Little ones!’

I had an idea one day, to dress my children up in old fashioned clothes.  We had a lot of fun as they ‘posed’ for photographs in flat cap and hat around the house. A few years later whilst looking over old photographs, I settled on the picture above, even though my Son was pulling a funny face, and decided to paint it in watercolour. The small photograph in the bottom corner is the actual one I worked from.
