'Selly Manor - Bourneville'

‘Selly Manor – Bournville’

This drawing was done from a photograph I took on a trip to Cadbury World, a chocolate factory near Birmingham. We literally walked around the corner from the Cadbury car park and fell upon the quaintest little village setting. Above, Selly Manor, is one of Birmingham’s oldest buildings dating back originally to around 1300.  Around 1907 it was dismantled, as apparently it was in a bad state of repair, and relocated to its present location in Bournville, as a restoration project by George Cadbury. It now stands as a museum and tourist attraction in the village setting. A beautiful Tudor building!

‘Chipping Campden, Cotswolds’

This little village street scene of Chipping Campden in the Cotswolds can also be seen in my Pen and Ink section. It was done from a photograph taken whilst on a family holiday.  I do like to recreate some of my artwork in different mediums. Whilst, I think, the pencil drawing gives a softer, more romanticised feel to the scene, the pen and ink illustration gives a very crisp no fuss kind of picture. It amazes me how two scenes exactly the same appear so different even when drawn by the same person. It is almost as if the ink illustration conveys matter of factly “I am, what I am” whereas the pencil drawing has more character and depth somehow, even though they are similarly shaded.

(I have included the Pen and Ink drawing below so a comparison of style can be seen together)

High Street, Broadway, Cotswolds

This is another pencil sketch of the beautiful village of Broadway in the Cotswolds, it was done from a photograph taken on a family holiday many years ago. Just last week we stopped off at the village on a trip down to London. The surrounding countryside on the day we arrived was like something out of a fairy tale. There had been several inches of snow and the tree lined roads looked like a scene from Austria in wintertime. As we walked along the main street I noticed that many of the shops now had new residents, indeed The Bindery Gallery as I have drawn above is now longer in business in High Street at this location.

' High Street, Broadway - Cotswolds'

‘ High Street, Broadway – Cotswolds’

Broadway in the Cotswolds – drawn in pencil from a photograph, taken on one of our many holidays there when our children were younger. The architecture is many hundreds of years old in this part of the country and I wanted to capture it in a medium, as if it could have been drawn at any time, from two hundred years ago to the present day.

Snowshill, Cotswolds

These two pencil drawings of Snowshill, in the Cotswolds were done from old photographs taken on family holidays. This is a beautiful, tiny, village in the Cotswolds. It is almost just one street wrapped around a church and graveyard. Below is another pencil sketch of Snowshill Church.
