'Old Calico Works Chimney in Edgworth'

‘Old Calico Works Chimney in Edgworth’

This is another of my coloured pen and ink sketches done from a photograph I took. It was a beautiful autumn day and because of this, I wanted to inject a feeling of that by using warm ink tones in the painting. Though if you compare others in this section, you will see this one is quite ‘toned down‘ to the vivid and vibrant nature of the others. As you can see I took the photograph from a high vantage point looking down and across the valley. The old, now disused chimney, formerly connected to Quarlton Vale Print and Bleachworks, has always looked somewhat out of place, as it just looms up in the middle of a field. Apparently when it was a working mill, further down in the valley, the chimney was connected via a flue for the best air flow to carry emissions away high above the hills. The scenery around Edgworth is very pretty with rolling hills and little stone cottages dotted here and there on the outskirts of the main village.

'Snowshill - Cotswold Village'

‘Snowshill – Cotswold Village’

Here is another Ink sketch of the beautiful little Cotswold Village of Snowshill.  I have previously shown this scene as a pencil drawing to be found at  Pencil Drawing – Snowshill, Cotswolds – Pencil sketch. Some scenes I really do enjoy drawing over and over in different mediums. On a previous trip to the Cotswolds, we got talking to some local people and asked,  “why you never saw anybody in the village?” Their reply was that, most cottages were now second homes to the ‘Rich City Folk’, who only visited sporadically. They explained this was such a shame because Locals, born and bred, were unable to afford the houses in the village any more, there were no local amenities either because there was no constant demand to support little shops. It was actually quite sad to hear, and witness the almost ghostlike village, which sits around the quaint little church and graveyard. I can see why, if you can afford it, you would want a piece of this lovely village, but it would be even nicer if people lived there full time and enjoyed it properly too!

'On the Canal - In Colour'

‘On the Canal – In Colour’

For those who have already seen the first post of this scene in ‘Pen and Inks’ just in black and white, I thought it might be nice to show you another version of the same coloured with inks. Not a medium I have worked much  with over the years, though every now and then I have another practice as above. I must admit I am always really excited by their vibrancy, (thinking about it, I really should have another practice – A girl can always do with a little excitement!)

'Unwanted Items to be left on step!'

‘Unwanted Items to be left on step!’

Whilst practising with my pen and inks a few years ago, I sketched this little imaginary scene. Initially is was meant to be nothing more than that. Though as I drew little bits here and there and then added the little girl,  the scene became more thought provoking to me. I had already put the notice on the door and the sad little teddy, parcel and shoe on the step but thought it should have something more – That is when I loosely sketched the small figure.  The slight tilt on her head made me wonder; Is she sad to leave her Teddy? Has she not read the sign on the door? Is she just sitting there by accident? Or indeed, does She feel unwanted? After I added coloured ink, I showed the sketch to my children for their opinions, not so much for the subject but the practice with the inks. They were both deeply touched with the little sad scene and they had their thoughts on it too. In the end this little picture drew so much emotional thought and discussion that I decided to frame it – Surely, whether good or bad,  that is what art is all about!?!
