From scraps to sophistication.!!!... Khaki reversible design tote bag and matching cosmetic purse set

From scraps to sophistication.!!!… Fully lined Khaki reversible design tote bag and matching cosmetic purse set. Those little squares have become tiny framed works of abstract art within the surrounding fabric. Why you may ask, has this become a set, rather than just a tote bag??? Well… if truth be told, I got so excited by the colours and and how nice the little squares looked, I completely forgot about the large crazy piece I had made  ;-D LOL.

Having made the front into something of a tryptic design, I picked up my remaining (at that point) little crazy patchwork square for the reverse of the khaki tote surrounding that also at different angles until I had them the same size.....only then did I remember the centre piece I had intended to use...ooops!!!

So, by happy accident and then by design another little creation came into being ;-) - a matching make up bag/cosmetic purse - also reversible!

Next for the khaki multi pocket, I just had to make one more tiny crazy square to complete the look...a couple of coordinating shoulder straps and a magnetic clast and last but not least...one oth the three beautiful metal buttons, which I have been keeping back for something rather special, now was the perfect time to use one, and, it matches perfectly!!

Next for the khaki multi pocket, I just had to make one more tiny crazy square to complete the look…a good many hours of hand quilting ensued…then, a  couple of coordinating shoulder straps, a magnetic clasp and last but not least…one of the three beautiful metal buttons which I have been keeping back for something rather special, now was that time to use one as a feature on the centre flap, and, it matches perfectly!!

Carried away by the moment …I completely forgot to use the large centre piece I had intended…ooops ;-/ seriously, what is all this fabric doing to me???? All was not lost as it became it’s own unique creation in the end as well!!

Citrus greens tote. After finally ceasing to chase my own tail, I am managing to catch up after my daughter's sea-grass basket marathon make! Today the second of my ''Go green'' totes was finally finished :-) There could be no other description than CITRUS!! The colour combination shouts lemons and limes like nothing else I have ever made so far. It's so bright and happy, how could you not sizzle through summer with such a bold accessory..???

My citrus greens tote!. After finally ceasing to chase my own tail, I am managing to catch up after my daughter’s sea-grass basket marathon make! Today the second of my ”Go green” totes was finally finished 🙂 There could be no other description than CITRUS!! The colour combination shouts lemons and limes like nothing else I have ever made so far. It’s so bright and happy, how could you not sizzle through summer with such a bold snazzy accessory..??? A trip to the beach perhaps, shopping – perfect!… off to a picnic – plenty of room….It’s go anywhere, do all solution…and, you’re sure to get noticed with those bright greens too 😉

Soooo many hours were spent combing each into workable pieces (shown here in their unfinished state) but more than worth the effort - and many reels of cotton - to end up with a totally unique crazy patchwork tote!

You might remember these from the last post/first finished ”Go green” bag quest??! Take away those rough edges, add a bit more fabric, et voilà 😀

As you will see, I have incorporated three of the four, smaller crazy patchwork squares into the reverse of the tote bag, keeping one back for the little double multi-pocket inside

All in all, a few off cuts of brand new fabric, which could so easily have been thrown away, instead, have become a bright, bold, brand new bag…Brilliant!!! 😀

A beautiful Blue buttoned bag! AND...just as beautiful on the back too!!

A beautiful Blue buttoned bag!
AND…just as beautiful on the back too!!

Some people may wonder the point of chopping up bits of material…just to sew them back together again??! Here’s why I enjoy it so much!! Not to mention the fact that I delved into more of my button collection for this one as well…Oooo HAPPY DAYS !!!!!  😀  !!

Not content to make just one side pretty…I did the reverse in the same design too – oh, and then, a lovingly handmade interior pocket as well! Why not look good from every angle??

Just in case you think it's the front again...check out the buttons...a couple are slightly different!

Just in case you think it’s the front again…check out the buttons…a couple are slightly different…all added to the hand stem stitched       lines to give a little flower border effect!

All my totes are fully lined, this one being no different, though a little extra time and effort was spent making an interior patchwork multi pocket and following the theme of the tote bag, I added a few extra little buttons flowers as well - all looking very pretty against the printed blue and white cotton lining! All in all, I reckon this is a brilliant, navy, blues and white 'must have' Summer accessory ;-)

Combining some of my original ideas and patterns I decided to use some recent offcuts from my last project and create a colourful and cute fun tote. I never tire of my little sheep in pink wellies and they seemed just perfect for this new project. After forming the patchwork landscape I cut shapes from felt and hand stitched them into place….That little sheep is sooo proud of her little boots! 😉

Inside there is a useful multi pocket, with one large open pocket and a coordinating zip on the other, adding colour to the inside of the cream cotton interior. Not wanting to miss the opportunity I decided to add a little sheep on the reverse as well...

The whole tote has been hand quilted, a little magnetic clasp for extra security on the centre flap and a few little heart buttons finish off the new design perfectly! A Pretty and practical and unique little creation! :-)

Sweet Gingerbread Guys

Sweet Gingerbread Guys

Some of you may have seen my last post when I was busily creating my version of seasonal greetings cards, some of which included cards with Felt Gingerbread Guys on. Since then I seem to have caught some kind of gingerbread craze and needed to get this out of my system so I could move on with other creating both for my Etsy shop and the upcoming craft event I will be doing – Santa’s Christmas Cracker at the Greenmount United Reformed Church on the 30th November. So, to achieve this, I decided to make a handmade patchwork bag and applique on a couple of gingerbread guys to use the last of my felt of that colour and that would be that ….I thought!

But no…….decisions, decisions….Hmmmm… I couldn’t make up my mind which background cotton to use for the bag! After cutting out the little guys ready to sew on the  centre panel I did a few ”dry runs” with different fabrics until I narrowed it down to two contenders, a navy print and a light brown/beige print. But still I couldn’t quite decide. So off I went rummaging in the felt box and lo and behold (because I had promised myself I will not go and buy any more felt in this colour until after Christmas – as that would make this gingerbread craze continue I am sure) I found a slightly different shade that would still pass for some more of the little guys….so there I was cutting out even more… the final decisions was made I would make two bags/totes, one of each colour.

After sewing the felt shapes to the cream cotton centre panel I added little beads for eyes and little buttons to decorate them, as always I love to use and recycle old buttons so also decided to hand sew a grass border beneath their feet with more colourful buttons to give the impression of flowers between them. After much constructing I was then ready to hand quilt around the little guys to ‘raise their profile’ a little and then also over the entire bag/tote. Inside I added one of my multi-pockets,one with a zip, and then a magnetic clasp on the centre flap. There finished……..bag/tote number one!

I took a deep breath….   ;-D …….

and then…..

set about bag/tote number two repeating the same process all over again. They might have the same idea but they are equally very different…AND I am pleased to confess – my gingerbread guy craze is definitely over now … for this years at least!

Below are a couple more pictures of the finished bags/totes

That really was the very last pieces of felt I had in those colours so as not to waste it I made one very very very last gingerbread guy and sewed it onto the last pocket! then I ironed the cream cotton and connected the fabrics to finish 🙂

Now I can finally move on!
