I was so happy with my monochrome painting of ‘Lake District Bridge’ I immediately started this yesterday, a local farm, which I previously drew in soft pastels. Again, I love the simplicity of the black and white landscape..it gives a lovely feel to the scene 🙂

'Dewdrop on the Anemone'

‘Dewdrop on the Anemone’

In the corner of my gravelled garden, I had a little patch of anemone flowers nestling in with a bunch of stray Candy tuft, which I think I can thank the blackbirds for! The birds see no problem in rearranging my garden plant theme in the search for worms and the like.  Anyway, the whole reason for this pastel drawing was the tiny dew drops which seemed to be floating on the budding flower. They seemed to be defying gravity on the curved petal. After observing them I quickly went for my camera, thinking all the time “I bet they have rolled off. when I get Back!” But no, They were still there!! I took the shot, checked the image on my camera, looked back at the flower… and they were gone. They had waited just long enough to be captured for eternity!!!

'Petit Griffon Basset Vendeen'

‘Petit Griffon Basset Vendeen’

This was a pet portrait done from a photograph of a show dog (Name of dog to be withheld for security – it won a lot of shows!!!) It was partly owned by the breeders from whom we got our Weimaraner, Peppy. In this pet portrait I decided to be loose and free with the pastel and let the image fall onto the paper rather than my normal method of blending. I quite liked the outcome and effect but I still to prefer to be more precise for portraiture, especially for commission purposes unless asked otherwise!

This is another portrait of my Weimarnaner, ‘Peppy’ (See others of him in Animal Portraits;   Weimaraner Pastel Pet Portrait – My dog Peppy as a pup, Weimaraner and his toy – Pastel portrait of Peppy  ). At the time I went to take the photograph he was fast asleep and looked really cute, snuggled up into a little (rather large actually) ball! As I knelt down and turned the camera on he lifted his head very sleepily as if to say, ‘You woke me up!’, ‘What now?’ But even though he looked like a grumpy old man I still decided to draw the pastel portrait to show another side of a Dog’s Life!!!

‘ “SCENE” From a Bench Series’ – Tuscan Ruin – Oil Pastel

‘ “SCENE” From a Bench Series’ -‘Tuscan Ruin’

In this Oil Pastel drawing I wanted the viewer to be aware there was a backdrop to the picture but for the main focus to be within the ruin and of how the light entered it and cast shadows, light and shade. The image should project, hopefully, a sense of a hot summer’s day, even becoming hotter into the middle distance until a haze is cast over the far flung mountains. Pure imagination!

This series of pictures have all been done using Oil Pastels and in each one I have placed a Bench. Always the same bench but sometimes I’ve flipped it around to suit the angle of the scene. All the pictures in this series are from my imagination and are drawn to give maximum illusion to the perspective of the landscape around and create as much depth as possible in the small images. Hence the series title, ‘ “SCENE” From A Bench’ !

This picture was a lot of fun and it was the first in the series that I did. Using oil pastels in this one, especially in the dense forest, was done by layering many different colours on top of each other first, then scraping back until I was happy with the effect of light and shade. Once I was happy then I used the pastel in the conventional drawing manner to give more detail, throwing in some ornate toadstools for good measure!

'Jack and Jill' - On a Ledge Series

‘Jack and Jill’ – On a Ledge Series

Previously I mentioned in this section (Still Life) I had worked with the same subjects though in different mediums. ‘Jack and Jill’ is one of those subjects, the last time it was posted, it was a painting in watercolour. This is the soft pastel version.  The pastels make it that you can almost feel the softness of the little knitted woollen jumpers on the dolls. Still to come will be the Oil painted version!

Below is how I came up with the idea of ‘On a Ledge Series’ for those who have not already seen them;

Bored and uninspired one day, I stood in my kitchen wondering what I could draw? Whilst wondering I absent mindedly started tidying and rearranging things on the ledge. I’m not one for nice pot ornaments, rather have slightly wacky or weird decorative things around! So, as I now had a disarrayed pile of things I had moved and a clean window ledge – The idea struck me. I could use it as a little staging area for a series of still life pictures!!!
