My Mum and Ronnie

My Mum and Ronnie

This is what I did this afternoon, really I should have been ironing, but I think the three hours painting was more relaxing, the ironing can be at the front of tomorrows ”To Do” list. No guarantees it will happen, as I went shopping yesterday with my Mum, a bit of indulgence, I invested in some new fabrics, using my birthday money, Yey! I feel a creative patchwork moment on the horizon!!!

This painting was a request of my Mum’s friend Ronnie, she has been reluctant to tell me he wanted it done as she, like myself, is non too fond of being either on photographs or pictures of any kind. However, eventually she asked me and gave me the tiniest photo to work from, it was from their holiday in Scotland last year. I do believe the high colour on their cheeks was caused not by sunshine, but the inclement weather, wind and rain!

Whether this painting is actually finished or not remains to be seen, I was asked to leave the background out as Ronnie wanted it to match the one I painted of himself for his seventieth birthday;

Portraits – ‘Ronnie’ – Watercolour Portrait

and the one which I painted of my Mum when she was seventeen;

Watercolour portrait of My Mum

Though I do feel it could do with something as a backdrop, we shall see, Maybe the black mount will be all he wants. Ronnie does seem to manage to keep getting himself in my portraiture works, here is one, for those who haven’t seen it before, of Ronnie when he was a young lad with his siblings.(He’s the one on the right)

Watercolour Sepia Family Portrait from Old Photograph

Now, I just need to find somewhere to hide my ironing, then I can start sewing tomorrow! 😉

'Ronnie'

‘Ronnie’

This painting was done at special request by our family friend, Ronnie, for himself. He confessed he had always wanted a portrait of just himself and decided that he would have one, and that was that! Ronnie also appears in another portrait painting I have done, though he was a little younger on that one,  Watercolour Sepia Family Portrait from Old Photograph (He is the one on the right of that painting). The portrait was done just in time for his 70th Birthday, he said he was so pleased with it, he wanted another for his 80th!!! That’s sorted my present out for him then.

'Assynt - Scotland'

‘Assynt – Scotland’

This picture was painted from a photograph my Daughter took whilst on an Earth Science field trip. They were actually camping out on the side of a mountain in below zero conditions. Having been on field trips similar beforehand, when the offer was put to the group “Who will dig out a toilet for camp?” My daughter quickly raised her hand and proceeded with the task. Why, you may ask did she volunteer? The reason being, that, at the end of the trip, there is no call for volunteers just a pointed finger to the chosen person to fill the toilet in – AND its never pointed at the person who dug the hole in the first place! She has always been quick to learn!!

A beautiful part of Scotland.

This simple watercolour was done from a photograph I took Whilst on a day trip to the Cumbrian countryside. I had never been here before and nearly missed the bridge, just at the last minute I escaped from the car (after my husband had stopped!) and poked my way through the bushes to take this very angled photograph.

As everything seemed to be frozen in time in this scene, I decided to post it in Still Life. This painting was done from a photograph my Daughter sent to me, whilst studying at Worcester College, Oxford, it is of her friends from Oxford and Cambridge universities. It seems a simply idyllic moment of student life, sitting on the banks of the river discussing maybe their subjects, life or even what budget they have left to buy dinner that night – Who knows!?

'Sunrise At The Barn'

‘Sunrise At The Barn’

This watercolour was more of a doodle than based on any actual scene. I was playing around with colours which seem to arise on a cold misty dawn. In my imagination this is how the painting played out, connecting everything together by using the same colours throughout, from the sky, the trees across the barn and down to the ground. The pathway between the barbed wire fencing I added later to give the painting more perspective. Quite pleased with my imaginary doodle!

'Jack and Jill' - On a Ledge Series - (Watercolour version)

‘Jack and Jill’ – (On a Ledge Series) – Watercolour version

Bored and uninspired one day, I stood in my kitchen wondering what I could draw? Whilst wondering I absent mindedly started tidying and rearranging things on the ledge. I’m not one for nice pot ornaments, rather have slightly wacky or weird decorative things around! So, as I now had a disarrayed pile of things I had moved and a clean window ledge – The idea struck me. I could use it as a little staging area for a series of still life pictures!!!

The idea for “On a Ledge Series” was born.  Above is one version of ‘Jack and Jill’, two little rag dolls my daughter brought home from a trip abroad. This particular one is done in watercolour. Other posts of Jack and Jill for the future will be a version in soft pastel and one in oils.

‘Cycling in Snowy Macclesfield’

I have painted two versions of this scene, both in watercolour. This is the ‘Snowy’ version, where I had great fun imagining and creating the landscape with snow on it. The other version is with a lush green landscape. (See ‘Cycling in Macclesfield’ – also in Landscapes)
