‘From Affetside to Winterhill’ – Pen and Ink version

This is one of my favourite ink sketch illustrations, of the tiny village at the top of the hill called ‘Affetside’. Another of my art versions of this scene can be found  Landscapes – ‘From Affetside to Winterhill ‘- Pastel (and Pen& Ink versions) – Landscapes. More information about this scene in the link.

‘Chipping Campden, Cotswolds’

This little village street scene of Chipping Campden in the Cotswolds can also be seen in my Pen and Ink section. It was done from a photograph taken whilst on a family holiday.  I do like to recreate some of my artwork in different mediums. Whilst, I think, the pencil drawing gives a softer, more romanticised feel to the scene, the pen and ink illustration gives a very crisp no fuss kind of picture. It amazes me how two scenes exactly the same appear so different even when drawn by the same person. It is almost as if the ink illustration conveys matter of factly “I am, what I am” whereas the pencil drawing has more character and depth somehow, even though they are similarly shaded.

(I have included the Pen and Ink drawing below so a comparison of style can be seen together)

‘ “SCENE” From a Bench Series’ -‘Tuscan Ruin’

In this Oil Pastel drawing I wanted the viewer to be aware there was a backdrop to the picture but for the main focus to be within the ruin and of how the light entered it and cast shadows, light and shade. The image should project, hopefully, a sense of a hot summer’s day, even becoming hotter into the middle distance until a haze is cast over the far flung mountains. Pure imagination!

This series of pictures have all been done using Oil Pastels and in each one I have placed a Bench. Always the same bench but sometimes I’ve flipped it around to suit the angle of the scene. All the pictures in this series are from my imagination and are drawn to give maximum illusion to the perspective of the landscape around and create as much depth as possible in the small images. Hence the series title, ‘ “SCENE” From A Bench’ !

Worcester College Ducks, Oxford University

For those who have browsed my LANDSCAPE SECTION, You may recognise this scene. In Landscapes it was done in soft pastels which gives it a real feeling of softness, This is the preliminary sketch for that artwork. The drawing was done from a photograph taken whilst visiting my Daughter, who was studying for her Master’s Degree at the time. The ducks at Worcester College are considered very important and are contained within the College Emblem.

'Unwanted Items to be left on step!'

‘Unwanted Items to be left on step!’

Whilst practising with my pen and inks a few years ago, I sketched this little imaginary scene. Initially is was meant to be nothing more than that. Though as I drew little bits here and there and then added the little girl,  the scene became more thought provoking to me. I had already put the notice on the door and the sad little teddy, parcel and shoe on the step but thought it should have something more – That is when I loosely sketched the small figure.  The slight tilt on her head made me wonder; Is she sad to leave her Teddy? Has she not read the sign on the door? Is she just sitting there by accident? Or indeed, does She feel unwanted? After I added coloured ink, I showed the sketch to my children for their opinions, not so much for the subject but the practice with the inks. They were both deeply touched with the little sad scene and they had their thoughts on it too. In the end this little picture drew so much emotional thought and discussion that I decided to frame it – Surely, whether good or bad,  that is what art is all about!?!
