'Up A Country lane' (Oil on Canvas 100cm x 80cm)

‘Up A Country lane’ (Oil on Canvas 100 cm x 80 cm)

This  Oil Painting of a Local Scene – ‘Up A Country Lane’ was done to try and capture the intensity of the sunlight flooding the quiet lane. It is a little farmers track leading to open countryside. Painting this picture I used only pieces of cardboard and string –No brushes or pallet knives allowed! It is the same technique I used to paint the picture for my Nephew’s wedding (Landscape Oil painting of a Bridge in The Lake District – Also in Landscapes). Look out also for ‘Landscape – ‘Down A Country Lane’ – Oil Landscape also painted in oils on a 100 cm x 80 cm canvas though this time using brushes!

' Hidden Harwood '

‘ Hidden Harwood ‘

This would seem to be a rather strange subject to want to paint, a set of steps that seem to lead to nowhere. However, I found the aspect of the light and shadows very appealing. It was a painting which took no more than three hours to complete, as it just seemed to work straight away. The whole image just seems to draw you in, to wonder where it goes? At exhibitions, it certainly got the locals talking about where it was in Harwood. A surprising amount of people did actually know too!

Tyrolean Stream

Tyrolean Stream

I was having one of those days where I didn’t know what I wanted to paint. So, I put my brain in gear with my paintbrush –  I just let my imagination take me to the place you see above. I suppose I created a scene of where I wanted to be. Sometimes letting your imagination loose , shows you what you really want! I created my thoughts and put them on canvas for the world to enjoy too!

Romantic bridge in the Lake District

Romantic bridge in the Lake District

This oil painting was done for my nephew and his wife for their Wedding present. It was ‘Their Bridge’ where he proposed to her. I first did them a picture in pen and ink (which is also on this site) but also wanted to try out a recent technique I had been using to paint in oils. Quite simply, I got a cereal box and ripped it into thin strips, squeezed out some oil paints onto a pallet, and painted!  No brushes or pallet knives were used in the making of this picture! And the whole picture which is only approx 14″ x 10″ was done in less than two hours, though it did take almost three months to dry!!!

Capturing once more the sunlight and shadows cast along the main village street – a rare day in Bolton!!! Being the ‘bowl town’ of Lancashire I’m sure one day we will be rained upon enough to fill it to the rim!

Sunshine and Shadows at The Last Drop Village

Sunshine and Shadows at The Last Drop Village

As well as the Walmsley Church Oil painting on previous page of landscapes I managed to capture this sunlit and shadow scene the same day on camera. Which I transferred onto canvas in oil paint. Oil paint and pastel are my favourite mediums to work with, as they both give the perfect expression I’m looking to achieve. Here the oil paint captures crisply, with true tones, the clarity of the day and its shadows. Whilst, pastel I feel, lends itself perfectly to the softness of animal portraits. That’s my opinion anyway!

Sleeping Shadows

Sleeping Shadows

Whilst we seem to have very few sunny days around the area I live, when we do I spend my time  (Very quickly-I might add-
as it doesn’t stay very long) trying to capture the sun’s light and shadows on my camera. Then subsequently transferring to canvas. In this instance creating an Oil painting of a small church and graveyard on the fringe of Bolton. Walmsley Unitarian Chapel. The shadows struck me as somewhat symbolic as they gently seemed to rest over the earth, as if silently soul searching and encompassing. The moment seemed all so peaceful, that the light should cast shadows just so touching in this place.

Below is the photograph from which I made the Oil painting.
