Painting with bleach – Available on My Etsy Shop CARENSCANVASANDCRAFT for a limited time!

Having now got into the swing of the New year I feel the creations queue growing inside me and its definitely time to get on and let them out. Having completed the first A3  sized bleach painting of a forest for Ronnie I carried on and did another for my Etsy shop. Although they are all of a similar scene (from my imagination) each one is also unique and original, it would be impossible whilst using bleach and water to replicate an exact copy and so they are more of a series by that respect.

Painting with bleach is quite exciting and very experimental as you have to wait for it to dry out before knowing the result and whether or not it needs reworking and so the process goes on, painting in reverse, ‘removing’ the picture onto the paper, until I am happy with the effect.

Bleach on this particular black card has produced a green tinged effect to the scene (which hasn’t been picked up very well by my poor photographic efforts with my little Fujifilm camera) which I must admit I quite like now. It turns out to be less harsh and somehow more mysterious than a stark white on black!

More bleach paintings coming soon :-)!

Ronnie's forest bleach painting

Ronnie’s forest bleach painting

After showing an experimental imaginary bleach painting on WordPress.com last year I was asked by our family friend, Ronnie, if I would do a larger version for him. As everything art and craft wise became quite hectic in the run up to the holidays, I said it would be in the new year – and here it is as promised.

This painting was done on standard A3 black card, (double the size of the first one) using nothing more than a little brush, domestic bleach and water with a touch of imagination!

After having a preview of the larger version, Ronnie was ”Really pleased with it!” my Mum informed me and now it is in a glazed frame on its way to be hung in his apartment.

Thanks for your continuing support Ronnie! 🙂 (I know he reads my blog!!!)

‘Dewdrop on the Anemone’

In the corner of my gravelled garden, I had a little patch of anemone flowers nestling in with a bunch of stray Candy tuft, which I think I can thank the blackbirds for! The birds see no problem in rearranging my garden plant theme in the search for worms and the like.  Anyway, the whole reason for this pastel drawing was the tiny dew drops which seemed to be floating on the budding flower. They seemed to be defying gravity on the curved petal. After observing them I quickly went for my camera, thinking all the time “I bet they have rolled off. when I get Back!” But no, They were still there!! I took the shot, checked the image on my camera, looked back at the flower… and they were gone. They had waited just long enough to be captured for eternity!!!

'"SCENE" From A Bench Series - Beach Huts'

‘”SCENE” From A Bench Series – Beach Huts’

Here we are using the old bench again! This time I wanted to create a colourful, happy seaside theme and  to direct the interest of the picture to the inside of a beach hut. It was just a quirky little artistic moment of creativity.

This series of pictures have all been done using Oil Pastels and in each one I have placed a Bench. Always the same bench but sometimes I’ve flipped it around to suit the angle of the scene. All the pictures in this series are from my imagination and are drawn to give maximum illusion to the perspective of the landscape around and create as much depth as possible in the small images. Hence the series title, ‘ “SCENE” From A Bench’ !

‘Sleepy Monkey and Wooden Duck’

Above is another in my series of “On a Ledge” paintings. As random things go that live on a window ledge I must say I do like Sleepy Monkey, this painting is the second he got to pose for!  The light, shade and reflections in this picture worked surprisingly well in the watercolours. As the main focus was centred around painting art for children rooms’ in this series, I have been surprised too by the number of adults who have shown much interest in them.

Here is how the idea arose for “On a Ledge Series” for those who have not seen others in the range

Bored and uninspired one day, I stood in my kitchen wondering what I could draw? Whilst wondering I absent mindedly started tidying and rearranging things on the ledge. I’m not one for nice pot ornaments, rather have slightly wacky or weird decorative things around! So, as I now had a disarrayed pile of things I had moved and a clean window ledge – The idea struck me. I could use it as a little staging area for a series of still life pictures!!!

Cephalonia

Kefalonia

On a family holiday abroad, many years ago, we stayed on the beautiful Island of Kefalonia. The clarity of light was amazing. People who had been there before had told me about this, but until you are actually there you really can’t understand fully what they mean. This picture was done from a photograph I took on a day trip roaming the island. To an artist the colours and light are amazing!

‘ “SCENE” From a Bench Series’ -‘Tuscan Ruin’

In this Oil Pastel drawing I wanted the viewer to be aware there was a backdrop to the picture but for the main focus to be within the ruin and of how the light entered it and cast shadows, light and shade. The image should project, hopefully, a sense of a hot summer’s day, even becoming hotter into the middle distance until a haze is cast over the far flung mountains. Pure imagination!

This series of pictures have all been done using Oil Pastels and in each one I have placed a Bench. Always the same bench but sometimes I’ve flipped it around to suit the angle of the scene. “On a Ledge Series” – ‘Sleepy Monkey and Wooden Ducks’

Here we are again at that tidy window ledge, with more still life exhibits! The two ducks I pinched (Borrowed) out of my Daughter’s bedroom where their normal duty is to act as bookends and the monkey was from my Son’s room.  He had a jungle theme many years ago.  This particular still life was done in oil paint, though in the future I will post another of Sleepy Monkey and Wooden Duck (Only one duck next time!) painted in watercolour.

Looking again at this picture, I love how tidy my kitchen worktop is!! Maybe I should do more in this series!!! Below is an explanation of how this set of paintings was born for anyone who hasn’t seen others in the series.

Bored and uninspired one day, I stood in my kitchen wondering what I could draw? Whilst wondering I absent mindedly started tidying and rearranging things on the ledge. I’m not one for nice pot ornaments, rather have slightly wacky or weird decorative things around! 'Down A Country Lane' - (Oil on Canvas 100 cm x 80 cm)

‘Down A Country Lane’ – (Oil on Canvas 100 cm x 80 cm)

This is a Local Countryside Scene painted in oils on box canvas using brushes  I have also painted this same country track, from the bottom looking up, titled ‘Landscape – ‘Up A Country Lane’ – Oil Landscape also to be seen in this landscape section. Though the two methods of painting were very different, in the other painting I used pieces of cardboard and string to paint with  – NO BRUSHES! They both have a totally different feel to them even though it is the same track.

'Up A Country lane' (Oil on Canvas 100cm x 80cm)

‘Up A Country lane’ (Oil on Canvas 100 cm x 80 cm)

This  Oil Painting of a Local Scene – ‘Up A Country Lane’ was done to try and capture the intensity of the sunlight flooding the quiet lane. It is a little farmers track leading to open countryside. Painting this picture I used only pieces of cardboard and string –No brushes or pallet knives allowed! It is the same technique I used to paint the picture for my Nephew’s wedding (Landscape Oil painting of a Bridge in The Lake District – Also in Landscapes). Look out also for ‘Landscape – ‘Down A Country Lane’ – Oil Landscape also painted in oils on a 100 cm x 80 cm canvas though this time using brushes!
