"On a Ledge Series" - Geranium and Harvey!

“On a Ledge Series” – Geranium and Harvey!

Today seems to be a day of showing you my art in different mediums. This oil painting was a rerun of the pastel version (compare) Still Life Pastel “On a Ledge Series” – Geranium and Friend Harvey. I can never decide if I like this one or the pastel version more, I think they both have their own appeal for different reasons.

The reasoning and inspiration for this series; Bored and uninspired one day, I stood in my kitchen wondering what I could draw? Whilst wondering I absent mindedly started tidying and rearranging things on the ledge. I’m not one for nice pot ornaments, rather have slightly wacky or weird decorative things around! So, as I now had a disarrayed pile of things I had moved and a clean window ledge – The idea struck me. I could use it as a little staging area for a series of still life pictures!!!

'Poppy Perfection'

‘Poppy Perfection’

In this painting the main thing I wanted to convey to the canvas was the transparency of the the petal with the sunlight shining through in the early morning. The reason I titled it ‘Poppy perfection’ was that I caught this flower on photograph at the pinnacle of its existence. It really was a good year in my garden for poppies (See also my other paintings of poppies especially Oil Painting – Still Life – ‘Poppies on Parade’ which was a collection of flowers from my garden) But I still think this was the most perfect and beautiful poppy I think I have ever see. As if to highlight that fact I painted the background quite abstractly to show the comparison. Whilst the background flowers in my opinion needed to be there for the composition of the still life I didn’t want their distraction from the main focus of the Poppy!

'Down A Country Lane' - (Oil on Canvas 100 cm x 80 cm)

‘Down A Country Lane’ – (Oil on Canvas 100 cm x 80 cm)

This is a Local Countryside Scene painted in oils on box canvas using brushes  I have also painted this same country track, from the bottom looking up, titled ‘Landscape – ‘Up A Country Lane’ – Oil Landscape also to be seen in this landscape section. Though the two methods of painting were very different, in the other painting I used pieces of cardboard and string to paint with  – NO BRUSHES! They both have a totally different feel to them even though it is the same track.

'Up A Country lane' (Oil on Canvas 100cm x 80cm)

‘Up A Country lane’ (Oil on Canvas 100 cm x 80 cm)

This  Oil Painting of a Local Scene – ‘Up A Country Lane’ was done to try and capture the intensity of the sunlight flooding the quiet lane. It is a little farmers track leading to open countryside. Painting this picture I used only pieces of cardboard and string –No brushes or pallet knives allowed! It is the same technique I used to paint the picture for my Nephew’s wedding (Landscape Oil painting of a Bridge in The Lake District – Also in Landscapes). Look out also for ‘Landscape – ‘Down A Country Lane’ – Oil Landscape also painted in oils on a 100 cm x 80 cm canvas though this time using brushes!

'Stonehenge In The Sun'

‘Stonehenge In The Sun’

As of many people in the past, and possibly of the future, I have a great fascination with Stonehenge. So much so that whilst redesigning our garden a few years ago we unearthed quite a few old stone path edgers. Being just a little bit weird, I decided they would make a great mini Stonehenge in the corner of our garden- And there they still stand today. On Another occasion, many years ago,  I redecorated one of our living rooms and thought it could do with a focal point – before you knew it there was a 12 foot by 6 foot mural of Stonehenge painted in the style of Constable, again I love it so much it still remains today. Though, the oil painting above was done from a photograph I took on the only actual visit I had to the historical site. Fortunately, the day was beautifully sunny and cast light and shade perfectly on the Old stones!
