Chipping Campden, Cotswolds

Chipping Campden, Cotswolds

This little village street scene of Chipping Campden in the Cotswolds can also be seen in my Pencil Drawings section. It was done from a photograph taken whilst on a family holiday. I do like to recreate some of my artwork in different mediums. The pen and ink illustration gives a very crisp no fuss kind of picture, whilst, I think, the pencil drawing gives a softer, more romanticised feel to the scene. It amazes me how two scenes exactly the same appear so different even when drawn by the same person. It is almost as if the ink illustration conveys matter of factly “I am, what I am” whereas the pencil drawing has more character and depth somehow, even though they are similarly shaded.

(I have included the pencil drawing below so a comparison of style can be seen together)

(Which can be seen in Pencil Drawings)

'Green Arms Road - Cows'

‘Green Arms Road – Cows’

This little colourful pen and ink illustration, I have reproduced twice more in just Black and White Ink Sketch, and also as a Pastel Landscape. Whilst in coloured ink it it somewhat vibrant, compared to the pastel version, it is very much toned down as to how I normally paint, much more vividly in inks! (See other Pen and Inks in this section). It is a local scene, and very much exposed to the elements especially the wind, which would probably explain why the cows are all huddling together by the fence.

Below I have also included the Black and white Ink Sketch and the Pastel Landscape version (Found also in Landscapes – as; ‘Green Arms Road – Cows’)

' "SCENE" From A Bench Series' - 'In The Woods'

‘ “SCENE” From A Bench Series’ – ‘In The Woods’

This series of pictures have all been done using Oil Pastels and in each one I have placed a Bench. Always the same bench but sometimes I’ve flipped it around to suit the angle of the scene. All the pictures in this series are from my imagination and are drawn to give maximum illusion to the perspective of the landscape around and create as much depth as possible in the small images. Hence the series title, ‘ “SCENE” From A Bench’ !

This picture was a lot of fun and it was the first in the series that I did. Using oil pastels in this one, especially in the dense forest, was done by layering many different colours on top of each other first, then scraping back until I was happy with the effect of light and shade. Once I was happy then I used the pastel in the conventional drawing manner to give more detail, throwing in some ornate toadstools for good measure!

Helping my Mum to paint!

Helping my Mum to paint!

This painting was done in an attempt to help my mum to paint. After years of seeing what I had produced in artwork and craft she surprised me one day by asking if I would show her how to paint. From being little my Mum had shown absolutely no erring toward creativity. Naturally, after I had gotten over the shock of her request, I said I would at least try to help. I added, ‘maybe we should start off simple!?’ To which my Mum produced a picture very similar to the one above and said, ‘This is what I want to paint!’ “Arrrrgh” was my first thought followed by Arrrrrgh, then Ok. Even though I am self taught, where to begin to show a beginner? I decided on a step by step approach – literally I draw a line here now you do it and so on. Eventually after Five hours of this we both had a picture. I have to admit if you held them (my Mum’s attempt and mine) at the end of the street and walked to the other end, looked back – they were similar!!! We painted them using just children’s round block paints (£1.99 painting set my Mum had bought), not even real watercolours. My Mum would not ever allow a second viewing of her artwork even to me. Though I never considered it to be of any great creation of mine, as it was based largely on a picture my Mum had brought to copy from, my Husband really liked the end result, so being a cheap skate, he got it for his birthday in a frame!

'Shifting Scenes'

Shifting Scenes in My ”Forgotten Dreams of Crimson”

This play around doodle was done whilst scribbling in another of those ‘bored moments’ of “I don’t know what I want to do today?!” Rather than use black and white, as I have done in some of my other abstracts in this section. I wanted to see how I would feel about one in colour? To be honest, I still don’t know, I think I prefer the black and whites. Though I do like looking around the whole image and still finding things I don’t remember drawing. When I do one of these abstracts it is never planned and I restrict myself from holding the picture at arms length until I’ve finished. That way I think I get to explore it as much as others would on first seeing it. Whilst the picture is just made up of random shapes shaded, it is a voyage of discovery in finding little figure type people within the shapes. Simply, by the right hand bottom corner, having a little perspective, it made me think about the theatre and moving background scenes. Hence, the thoughts before the title!

' High Street, Broadway - Cotswolds'

‘ High Street, Broadway – Cotswolds’

Broadway in the Cotswolds – drawn in pencil from a photograph, taken on one of our many holidays there when our children were younger. The architecture is many hundreds of years old in this part of the country and I wanted to capture it in a medium, as if it could have been drawn at any time, from two hundred years ago to the present day.

Compare the pencil drawing to the same image done in

Geranium and 'Friend' From My series of pictures "On a ledge series"

‘Geranium and Friend – Harvey’, From My series of pictures; “On a Ledge Series”

Bored and uninspired one day, I stood in my kitchen wondering what I could draw? Whilst wondering I absent mindedly started tidying and rearranging things on the ledge. I’m not one for nice pot ornaments, rather have slightly wacky or weird decorative things around! So, as I now had a disarrayed pile of things I had moved and a clean window ledge – The idea struck me. I could use it as a little staging area for a series of still life pictures!!!

The idea for “On a Ledge Series” was born.  Above is one – ‘Geranium and Friend – Harvey’ A still life done in  colourful pastel.
