'Cezanne's "Mount. Saint Victoire" overlooks Renoir - 'Boating on the Seine'

‘Cezanne’s -“Mount. Saint. Victoire” overlooks, Renoir’s- “Boating on the Seine” !’ OR “Rowing on a Mountain Lake”!

This is one of a mini series of paintings I did, working from old Master’s works. I had the idea of trying to seamlessly gel together two different artists’ masterpieces to form one new image (See another example of this in Still Life (Master Compilation Series) -” ‘EAR’, Where’s He Gone?” – Oil Still Life) These two scenes above, painted in oil, I think, work very well together, and it seems completely plausible that this scene could actually exist. Artwork with a twist. If you take away the titles of the Master’s works and I gave it a new title now as an original painting of “Rowing on a mountain lake” Maybe!!!?

"On a Ledge Series" - 'Sleepy Monkey and Wooden Ducks'

“On a Ledge Series” – ‘Sleepy Monkey and Wooden Ducks’

Here we are again at that tidy window ledge, with more still life exhibits! The two ducks I pinched (Borrowed) out of my Daughter’s bedroom where their normal duty is to act as bookends and the monkey was from my Son’s room.  He had a jungle theme many years ago.  This particular still life was done in oil paint, though in the future I will post another of Sleepy Monkey and Wooden Duck (Only one duck next time!) painted in watercolour.

Looking again at this picture, I love how tidy my kitchen worktop is!! Maybe I should do more in this series!!! Below is an explanation of how this set of paintings was born for anyone who hasn’t seen others in the series.

Bored and uninspired one day, I stood in my kitchen wondering what I could draw? Whilst wondering I absent mindedly started tidying and rearranging things on the ledge. I’m not one for nice pot ornaments, rather have slightly wacky or weird decorative things around! So, as I now had a disarrayed pile of things I had moved and a clean window ledge – The idea struck me. I could use it as a little staging area for a series of still life pictures!!!

'Poppies in the Wild'

‘Poppies in the Wild’

This oil painting was done from a collection of photographs I had taken of poppies growing in my garden. I selected little bits from the photographs and created this picture, almost in the same way I created by oil painting of ‘Poppies on Parade” also to be found in this ‘Poppy Section’.

‘ “On a Ledge Series” – Jack and Jill’

For those who have been keeping up with the rag dolls, ‘Jack and Jill’ – from my  “On a Ledge Series”, here as promised is the Oil Painted version. With the oil painting I feel there is somewhat more depth to the work top using the light and shade reflectively as shadows.  All the same subject but done in different media, each having a different feel to them. If you’ve not already, go check out The watercolour version and the pastel version which can also be found in Still Life. There are several more different studies to come in the future of different subjects on the ledge

Below is how I came up with the idea of ‘On a Ledge Series’ for those who have not already seen them;

Bored and uninspired one day, I stood in my kitchen wondering what I could draw? Whilst wondering I absent mindedly started tidying and rearranging things on the ledge. I’m not one for nice pot ornaments, rather have slightly wacky or weird decorative things around! ‘Jack and Jill’ – On a Ledge Series

Previously I mentioned in this section (Still Life) I had worked with the same subjects though in different mediums. ‘Jack and Jill’ is one of those subjects, the last time it was posted, it was a painting in watercolour. This is the soft pastel version.  The pastels make it that you can almost feel the softness of the little knitted woollen jumpers on the dolls. Still to come will be the Oil painted version!

Below is how I came up with the idea of ‘On a Ledge Series’ for those who have not already seen them;

‘Jack and Jill’ – (On a Ledge Series) – Watercolour version

Whilst wondering I absent mindedly started tidying and rearranging things on the ledge. I’m not one for nice pot ornaments, rather have slightly wacky or weird decorative things around! The idea for “On a Ledge Series” was born.  Above is one version of ‘Jack and Jill’, two little rag dolls my daughter brought home from a trip abroad. This particular one is done in watercolour. Other posts of Jack and Jill for the future will be a version in soft pastel and one in oils.

Mayday Festivities - Oxford University

‘Mayday Festivities’ – Oxford University

Whilst my Daughter was studying at Worcester College she would tell me of the Fantastic atmosphere in Oxford when it was Mayday. There would be Artists, Musicians, Dancers and all kinds of Street activities. including dancing around a Maypole. Often the partying would go on through the night. She sent me some photographs. This Watercolour above is depicting one of the scenes!

After I had finished painting, I stood back and noticed I had omitted to put the young girl’s legs in the painting. With my paint brush hovering ready to paint them in, I Stopped. I realised it actually gave something more to the picture by the legs absence. Like an ethereal figure floating off to the sound of the musician’s music!!

Dot by Dot! Out of My Head!!

Another day of ‘Doodling’ ended up with this ‘Dotty’ Ink Creation. The whole image was done one dot at a time. The portrayed illustration is actually from  my imagination- COMPLETELY MADE UP. Though I did take some still life inspiration from a chrysanthemum I had in a vase on the window ledge. I was very pleased with the Hands!

The Philosopher and The Scribe

The Philosopher and The Scribe

Somehow, or just because, I decided one day to use up the colour pallet I rarely deal with when doing landscapes or portraits. Liking better to utilise than leave to waste, I thought the best way to make the colours useful being in the form of abstract art. To which point I became more and more fascinated with the series as they emerged onto the canvas in front of me. The irony of this is that as I got into the moment I ran out of the colours I was using and had to go buy more!

Letting my Brain and paintbrush work together leads to all kinds of results. Here is the finished creation. Even though I painted it, I still find things which intrigue me on the canvas!

'Poppies in waiting'

‘Poppies in waiting’

This is one of a series of Poppy pictures I painted in oils. Throughout the poppy flowering season I would rush out each morning, into my garden, especially when the sunlight was good, to take photographs of the delicate new flowers opening. I feel the unopened poppy buds offer just as much interest as the flowers themselves, with their soft fuzzy fullness.
