Crazy lap quilt (1)

…..using up new, but, tiny off cuts of fabric…..

A little over a week ago, I finally tipped out my bags of leftover cotton fabrics, with full intent to use them ALL up in one project (how wrong I was on that though)!! I’d been keeping the bits quite orderly in separate colourway bags… but then….came face to face with this unruly scrappy looking pile………

Fabric offcuts

Somewhere….within,  lay my next project   ;-0

Not daunted by their tiny sizes, my main concern was to make something with some kind of symmetry in the final finished piece, whilst also avoiding putting too much thought into choosing every single piece to go next to the last as I sewed, otherwise it would never get done….. So, I tipped the piles into a kind of colour ‘blob area’ next to the sewing machine, all within arms length, where I could just grab a piece randomly and stitch away wherever it would fit in and around the ‘crazy patchwork method’ I had decided to go with…. For some stability I decided also to stitch them onto some pre-cut small squares of cotton wadding, which I later trimmed back to neat 5.5” square

crazy pw squares

Things were definitely looking very colourful by now 😉

For this project, I had made a pact with myself,  and decided I wasn’t going to go and buy Anything!!!!….it would all have to be done from what I already had! So, I picked a lovely lime cotton print which seemed to keep the super colourful theme on track… after measuring to make sure there was sufficient to cut all the remaining squares I needed, I realised I would have just enough to bind too, if I pieced five lengths together  😀 ……Already doing a happy dance and I’d not even started sewing the squares together lol

Crazy lap quilt (2)

Once assembled into a large panel, I used lightweight synthetic wadding and added a cream cotton backing before hand quilting over the entire piece…

Crazy lap quilt (3)

….believing…’you can Never have too much colour!!’ … I added in a lovely bright blue around the border, which I think, added just the perfect balance to the whole look and completed by hand stitching down the lime binding  😉

Crazy lap quilt (1)

Another cosy colourful creation completed!

At 42” x 60” it’s the perfect size for a Snuggle snooze blanket/Lap quilt/A single bed topper…OR even a super picnic rug!

Crazy lap quilt (5)

I’m super happy with this little quilt which emerged from the scraps…. though, I still have issues with my left overs ;-/  Although I made 42 (5.5 x 5.5) squares…In the end, it didn’t even look as though I’d used any from the pile at all!! On that basis, I reckon there are at least another 20 quilts waiting to be ‘discovered’ in the scrap bag….better set to again then  😉 !!

A couple of weeks ago, I had a birthday, and received a little money as a gift, so I thought long and hard what to get myself, coming up with no ideas, I decided it would be better invested in some new fabric pieces which to me is so much more exciting than buying new clothing or shoes! Having chosen a cotton print with little multi-coloured hearts, I rummaged around the shop finding coordinating cotton fabrics. Armed with my pile of cotton I went to have it cut into half meter pieces. Once paid for and home, I let my creative moment begin, I resurrected one of my own owl designs which I wanted to use as the central feature panel and found matching coloured felt in my stash, then work could commence.

Having set my little felt pieces out, I then hand stitched them to cream fabric, Cut up some of my new materials and arranged then as a patchwork border, The heart print fabric was just perfect in design and quantity to surround the panels I had and to make the fabric handles/straps. Inside I made one of my multi-pocket features, one pocket to include a zip for security and a magnetic clasp in the centre opening, then hand quilted the whole bag added some wooden buttons for eyes – Finished!

Another one off creation  – see below – now available in my Etsy shop

In between making cute Christmas cards I felt the urge to have a rest and make a patchwork and quilted Christmas themed shopping bag, I really do need to pull in my reigns, its no wonder I make such a great pile of ”stuff” all over my table, there are just too many ideas flying around my head all the time.

Anyway a couple of days saw this handmade bag as a result (see below) – which is now on my Etsy shop.  http://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/carenscanvasandcraft

Its perfect for those Christmas shopping trips, large enough to get plenty inside, with a multi-pocket in there too, its an item that can be used year after year.  A complete one off, not available any where else it could be the perfect solution for a unique gift or a little self indulgence. Also, a great feature of a quilted shopping bag, is, that it keeps your legs warm whilst travelling if you have it on your lap!

….then I went back to making my cards!

I feel like an elf getting ready for Christmas!

Christmas card crazy crafting

Christmas card crazy crafting

I have eventually managed to pull myself free from the gigantic amount of ”stuff” I have out on my table, working away for hours every day like a little elf, in the midst of card, felt, beads, cotton scraps, pom-poms, buttons and sequins, whilst I have been making Christmas cards. As ever I like to be a bit different when making things and cards are no exception, normally cards are not my thing, but at Christmas I do have a go, in my own way!

This is the second batch of cards I have made, just when I thought I would be ready for the craft fairs coming up at this time of year, My mum asked if she could take some to show people at the flats where she lives. I asked which ones she wanted to take and her reply was,

” Well as you don’t need then for a few weeks I might as well take them all in the box you’re storing them in, a couple of people might want to buy one, you never know!”

So off my Mum toddled with my 40 or so cards, I thought I might be lucky and sell one or two, but didn’t hold my breath as I was tidying my table for the next creative moment. Later that day, my Mum phoned and said

”You better make a few more cards!” When I asked if she had sold a few, her reply was ”No! I’ve sold them ALL!!”

Needless to say I stopped tidying my table and set to again for this batch. Just in case anyone might be interested I have put a couple of packs on My Etsy shop

http://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/carenscanvasandcraft

as well as hiding the others from my Mum!

Below is a small selection of some of the Christmas cards and decorations I have been craftily creating 🙂

Mysteries of the forest – Eyes are watching you! – A bleach painting

Here’s something new! I thought I would try painting just with pure bleach on a brush over black card. This was the result – I had no idea where this was going and just went with the flow, obviously I only had one chance at this, bleach and black card are not favourable to mistakes!! Maybe it is something I will have as my new favourite thing to practice, though not too often,. as I did have a sore throat after this attempt from the bleach fumes in a sunny conservatory

Life seems so hectic at the moment, I just don’t seem to be able to catch up with myself, I am producing so many different things craft and art wise, for so many different events I have almost forgotten to put them on my Etsy site or Word press, I hope to catch up in the next few days. Christmas looming, craft event people phoning to book me, spontaneous new ideas, combined with me playing with new designs for the fabric I bought last week all means I have little or no time to sleep—-So much to do and create!!!!!!!! Goodness, help my hoover, when I eventually get around to tidying… NO forget that idea, that can definitely wait……anyways here’s the first attempt with bleach and black card – whatever you read into it!

Mysteries of the forest - night-time goings on - eyes watching over you!

Abstractly coloured

This painting of a Local Scene is of a different angle to another post I have made in Landscapes, an oil painting called ‘Hidden Harwood’. The steps and tree in the centre of the picture are indeed the same. This is the only painting I have ever used acrylics for! Whilst the overall picture is okay, it is not the mediums I would have chosen. The church hall sat on the hill is where I meet with other artists. Their idea was for us all to paint the same scene as vividly as possible – in acrylics, which is what the majority there work in. It has got to be the fastest painting I have ever done, from initial sketch to completion in twenty minutes. Basically painted faster than the paint could dry!!!

Landscape – ‘Sunrise At The Barn’ – Watercolour Landscape

'Sunrise At The Barn'

‘Sunrise At The Barn’

This watercolour was more of a doodle than based on any actual scene. I was playing around with colours which seem to arise on a cold misty dawn. In my imagination this is how the painting played out, connecting everything together by using the same colours throughout, from the sky, the trees across the barn and down to the ground. The pathway between the barbed wire fencing I added later to give the painting more perspective. Quite pleased with my imaginary doodle!
