A bored moment filler!

face from ripped up painting bits or ‘perpetual art’ as my daughter remarked!

Over the holidays I found myself alone one day and thought I might experiment more with the Inktense pencils. Firstly I sketched out some small, (4” x 3”ish) doodles of imaginary countryside scenes with an ink pen, I decided not to ink over the originals, so I scanned them and scaled them up to A4 and printed them off on watercolour paper to play around. All good for quick experimentation though as I had scaled up so had the width of the lines on the drawings, some were now almost a quarter inch wide, not to be put off I carried on playing with the ink pencils just to get a feel of what they were like for blending and bleeding together. after an hour of so I had four wet soggy landscape scenes, so mainly green, blue and a little brown from trees and stone walls. As I sat with a cup of tea watching the contorting and curling failed experiments, I decided there must be something I could do with them – really I think I was just trying to pass more time until my family returned – having finished my brew time I grabbed my hair dryer and gave them a quick blast. A little more dry and curly than before I started ripping them into little bits. By the time my family returned from their day out I was sat sorting small pieces of coloured papers into piles, armed with my PVA glue, a brush and the cardboard back of the watercolour pad raring to go again. A couple more hours resulted in the piece you see above formed from bits of sky, lush green meadows and trees! – I have no idea who it is meant to be it just happened!

Definitely not my best work, but never wanting to throw anything away, the mosaic effect collage is different and I liked my daughter’s description of it having become a piece of perpetual art! It did also fill a bored moment…or two…..even three or four ๐Ÿ™‚

Mysteries of the forest – Eyes are watching you! – A bleach painting

Here’s something new! I thought I would try painting just with pure bleach on a brush over black card. This was the result – I had no idea where this was going and just went with the flow, obviously I only had one chance at this, bleach and black card are not favourable to mistakes!! Maybe it is something I will have as my new favourite thing to practice, though not too often,. as I did have a sore throat after this attempt from the bleach fumes in a sunny conservatory

Life seems so hectic at the moment, I just don’t seem to be able to catch up with myself, I am producing so many different things craft and art wise, for so many different events I have almost forgotten to put them on my Etsy site or Word press, I hope to catch up in the next few days. Christmas looming, craft event people phoning to book me, spontaneous new ideas, combined with me playing with new designs for the fabric I bought last week all means I have little or no time to sleep—-So much to do and create!!!!!!!! Goodness, help my hoover, when I eventually get around to tidying… NO forget that idea, that can definitely wait……anyways here’s the first attempt with bleach and black card – whatever you read into it!

Mysteries of the forest - night-time goings on - eyes watching over you!

Abstractly Blue

This play around doodle wasย done whilst scribbling in another of those โ€˜bored momentsโ€™ of โ€œI donโ€™t know what I want to do today?!โ€ Rather than use black and white, as I have done in some of my other abstracts in this section. I wanted to see how I would feel about one in colour? To be honest, It’s definitely grown in favour with me!!! Though I do like looking around the whole image and still finding things I donโ€™t remember drawing. When I do one of these abstracts it is never planned and I restrict myself from holding the picture at arms length untilย I’veย finished. That way I think I get to explore it as much as others would on first seeing it. Whilst the picture is just made up of random shapes shaded, it is a voyage of discovery in finding little figure type people within the shapes.

‘Sleepy Monkey and Wooden Duck’

Above is another in my series of “On a Ledge” paintings. As random things go that live on a window ledge I must say I do like Sleepy Monkey, this painting is the second he got to pose for! ย The light, shade and reflections in this picture worked surprisingly well in the watercolours. As the main focus was centred around painting art for children rooms’ in this series, I have been surprised too by the number of adults who have shown much interest in them.

Here is how the idea arose for “On a Ledge Series” for those who have not seen others in the range

Bored and uninspired one day, I stood in my kitchen wondering what I could draw? Whilst wondering I absent mindedly started tidying and rearranging things on the ledge.ย I’mย not one for nice potย ornaments,ย rather have slightly wacky orย weirdย decorative things around! So, as I now had a disarrayed pile of things I had moved and a clean window ledge โ€“ The idea struck me. I could use it as a little staging area for a series of still life pictures!!!

“On a Ledge Series” – ‘Sleepy Monkey and Wooden Ducks’

Here we are again at that tidy window ledge, with more still life exhibits! The two ducks I pinched (Borrowed) out of my Daughter’s bedroom where their normal duty is to act as bookends and the monkey was from my Son’s room. ย He had a jungle theme many years ago. ย This particular still life was done in oil paint, though in the future I will post another of Sleepy Monkey and Wooden Duck (Only one duck next time!) painted in watercolour.

Looking again at this picture, I love how tidy my kitchen worktop is!! Maybe I should do more in this series!!! Below is an explanation of how this set of paintings was born for anyone who hasn’t seen others in the series.

Bored and uninspired one day, I stood in my kitchen wondering what I could draw? ‘ “On a Ledge Series” – Jack and Jill’

For those who have been keeping up with the rag dolls,ย ‘Jack and Jill’ – from my ย “On a Ledge Series”, here as promised is the Oil Painted version. With the oil painting I feel there is somewhat more depth to the work top using the light and shade reflectively as shadows. ย All the same subject but done in different media, each having a different feel to them. If you’ve not already, go check out The watercolour version and the pastel version which can also be found in Still Life. There are several more different studies to come in the future of different subjects on the ledge

Below is how I came up with the idea of โ€˜On a Ledge Seriesโ€™ for those who have not already seen them;

‘Jack and Jill’ – On a Ledge Series

Previously I mentioned in this section (Still Life) I had worked with the same subjects though in different mediums. ‘Jack and Jill’ is one of those subjects, the last time it was posted, it was a painting in watercolour. This is the soft pastel version. ย The pastels make it that you can almost feel the softness of the little knitted woollen jumpers on the dolls. Still to come will be the Oil painted version!

Below is how I came up with the idea of ‘On a Ledge Series’ for those who have not already seen them;

Shifting Scenes in My ”Forgotten Dreams of Crimson”

This play around doodle wasย done whilst scribbling in another of those ‘bored moments’ of “I don’t know what I want to do today?!” Rather than use black and white, as I have done in some of my other abstracts in this section. I wanted to see how I would feel about one in colour? To be honest, I still don’t know, I think I prefer the black and whites. Though I do like looking around the whole image and still finding things I don’t remember drawing. When I do one of these abstracts it is never planned and I restrict myself from holding the picture at arms length until I’ve finished. That way I think I get to explore it as much as others would on first seeing it. Whilst the picture is just made up of random shapes shaded, it is a voyage of discovery in finding little figure type people within the shapes. Simply, by the right hand bottom corner, having a little perspective, it made me think about the theatre and moving background scenes. Hence, the thoughts before the title!

The idea for โ€œOn a Ledge Seriesโ€ was born. ย Above is one version of ‘Jack and Jill’, two little rag dolls my daughter brought home from a trip abroad. This particular one is done in watercolour. Other posts of Jack and Jill for the future will be a version in soft pastel and one in oils.
