''LOSTINTHOT'' Designer Custom Order 36'' x 48'' lap quit

”LOSTINTHOT”
Personalised Designer Custom Order 36” x 48” Lap Quit. Especially designed and handmade for my Dear Friend Jackie! I tried to capture all the feelings and emotions within the handmade appliquéd lady of Jackie herself ‘lostinthot’ within nature and also added a couple of ”Flutterbies” and her loving cat too!

YAY! I am so pleased to be able to share with you all, (Thank you for the permission Jackie!) a post about one of the commissioned custom order lap quilts, which has just been given full seal of approval,  by my lovely, Dear friend, Jackie! 🙂 Jackie has a couple of brilliant sites here on WordPress, which I follow avidly, her photographic work is absolutely stunning and I urge you all to pop over and have a look through her wonderful archives                                http://iamlostinthot.wordpress.com/about/

Jackie’s more recent WordPress site, Fun with Filters, has some amazing artistic effects placed over the original images, this is a link to one of my favourites        http://iamlostinthot2.wordpress.com/2014/05/26/iphone-snap-steampunk-hummingbird-v-2/     though to be honest, all her images are my favourites, it was hard to choose, but I decided on this one! 🙂

Firstly, I want to Thank Jackie immensely, for commissioning me to design and make her two (36” x 48”) custom order quilts! Not only that, but with trusting me completely, with all the design ideas, fabrics and colours, she really was in the dark from placing the order to seeing the final finished product, in both cases!

Jackie,  asked me to make a lap quilt for her cherished, two year old granddaughter with ‘Elephants’ as the theme and one for herself, with full free reign!!! Wow! I was sooo excited and a little scared too, what if she didn’t like them? But, thankfully, Jackie absolutely loved them both when they arrived in the US yesterday! 🙂  In fact, I have taken this ‘quote’ directly from her email,

”They look even better than they did in the pictures – your work is superb!!!”

I was very very happy, as you can see, 🙂 🙂 :-)!!! Though, to be fair, my photography does leave a lot to be desired!

It was a fantastic opportunity for me and I loved every minute, from the first pencil sketch design to buying whatever palette of colours I chose, making all the double layered,  ‘turned out’, applique pieces,  right through to the very last quilting stitch!

Thank You so much again Jackie, for giving me the creative craft challenge 🙂

YAY!!!  I have just received another commission custom order, after my client saw your two designs! – my portfolio of lap quilt designs is set for an increase, again – this time as a Wedding gift!  🙂

WHITE SHEEP KNITTING FROM DIP DYED BLUE SHEEP A quirky creation from Caren's canvas and craft

WHITE SHEEP KNITTING FROM DIP DYED BLUE SHEEP A quirky creation from Caren’s creative canvas and craft!

Just look at the quality of that knitting! told you I was getting good with those toothpicks!!

There has been such a demand for sheep knitting pictures, since I created my first one from my own drawings, I think I have been making them in my sleep. No two are ever exactly the same, so even when I have made another from my own drawings, different combinations of fabrics, positions of sheep etc, make each and every one different and unique!

This little lamb in the sheep dip has the most wonderful colour of blue felt for its fleece, which I managed to match perfectly with some embroidery thread that I used for the little knitted piece.

I love to give the pieces some individual character when I am making them, this one I decided to make the knitting sheep look deep in concentration – you can almost hear the sheep counting stitches!

DALLYING DUCKLINGS DAY OUT Fun framed fabric art collages

Cute creativeness freshly framed!

Another of my little fabric collages. Simple ideas to use small scraps of leftover fabrics. Green cotton prints to form a background panel, floral prints for flower meadows and a little strip of shaded blue fabric for the stream, a strip of cross stitch backing for a fence, some simple embroidery for grass and flowers along the edge, a little quilted sky and hand stitched felt pieces for the appliquéd ducks.

All those little bits that were once a jumble in my scrap bags have come together to form a pretty picture – no two will ever be exact copies  – my imagination has too many different things to get out there to make more than one exactly the same!

Piggies Knitting Collage

PIGGIES KNITTING COLLAGE A variety of framed collages are now available on My Etsy Shop

Another hectic week has resulted in more fabric art pieces this is just one of them! Each and everyone I create are from my own imagination, I never recreate exactly the same again! Colour combinations and little twists of my own patterns make them all one offs!

After drawing a simple design for my piggy picture, I created a ‘countryside’ background panel, from a selection of patchwork cottons,to which I could hand applique the little shapes I had cut to form the two piggies and the little lamb. Using felt for the trees, face, trotters and sheep I arranged everything in place before stitching to the panel Then added some simple embroidered grasses and flowers to give a bit more depth to the picture.

Getting really good now at knitting on toothpicks!!!

I knit them both a little pieces from some embroidery thread and secured the tiny ‘needles’ in place with a few more stitches. I thought it would be fun to have them both knitting from the same fleece, its just that one of the piggies has a more forceful approach to her knitting as she seems to be pulling the lamb towards her!

Cute colourful creations from Caren’s canvas and craft! Art for all in many shapes and forms!!

This little picture has been made from a selection of different fabrics to create a cute quirky scene. whilst I have machine stitched the background fabrics together, all the little applique pieces after that have been hand drawn, cut then stitched in place. The sheep sitting on the fence is one of my own drawings and though I may do a similar scene no two are ever completely alike, making them a unique piece of art!
If its been made by me at Caren’s creative canvas and craft there is only ever one like it in existence. If you find there isn’t something you want on my Etsy shop, please feel to contact me about a new creation idea! Items seem to ”fly off the shelves” sometimes before I even get to show what I have made, as in this case, which I don’t mind at all, but if you feel you might have missed out on something, a request can always see another unique similar creation happen!!

For fun I knitted some embroidery thread on two tooth picks to give the impression that the sheep is knitting from the wool of the smaller green sheep in the dye dip tub. For the effects of fencing I used small strips cut from a tapestry backing and stitched them in place too. Some simple embroidered grasses and flowers to decorate the foreground, with the final finishing touch of placing it on a felt backing and bordering it with cream cotton and then quilting the sky fabric to create texture on the plain fabric!

Photographed again without glass for added detail without reflections then safely mounted and glass replaced.

Now back to that ever growing pile of fabric……

Creating little pieces of art from fabric .

This little picture has been made from a selection of different fabrics to create a cute quirky scene. whilst I have machine stitched the background fabrics together, all the little applique pieces after that have been hand drawn, cut then stitched in place. The little line of ducks is one of my own drawings and though I may do a similar scene no two are ever completely alike, making them a unique piece of art!

Ever the artist, I turned the green fabrics round in the foreground to give a little perspective to the picture, by having the lines on it converge in the background. Some simple embroidered grasses and flowers to decorate the banks of the ”river”. On the back face of the picture I placed a piece of felt and then a cream fabric border around the whole piece with the final finishing touch of diamond quilting the sky to create texture on the plain fabric!

As I have done before, I photographed without the glass in the frame for more detail to be seen, without reflections getting in the way, then replaced the glass to keep dust off.

I must say, the pile of things on my table seems to be growing rather than diminishing as I create these little pictures… no rush to tidy though, we only sit around it at Christmas now, the unwritten rule, Its’ MY space for the rest of the year! 🙂

Without glass for better detail ''Hen house''

Without glass for better detail
”Hen house”

Okay, my imagination got the better of me again!

This is one of my new designs for my fabric art pictures and an ideal way to use up small pieces. After first drawing my design I sorted through my tiny scraps of material, which really meant, tipping a bin bag’s worth all over my dining table, at some points it was over 15 inches high – Wow – where to start in the sensory overload of colours? I decided on a colour scheme first for the hens and then the background.

After piecing together the square patchwork back panel, I hand cut and stitched the applique parts over the top to form the hens sitting on their clutches of eggs. A few small pieces of raffia served as their nests and some felt for their beaks and feet Finding a stray piece of Hessian in the cotton scrap bag, I decided it was meant to be there for this very creation and stitched it on as the nesting box and added ”Hen house” with some embroidery thread.

Quite pleased at that point, I still thought it could use something more, so I grabbed a couple of toothpicks and a reel of blue embroidery thread (like you do! – Or, is that just me?!?) and set off knitting, once I got going it was quite an effort to stop. I don’t knit very often, and fiddly as it is on such tiny sticks, it was also quite relaxing. Having got to a good length, as I wanted the ‘scarf’ to sit out and around the mount area, I then stitched the little needles to the hen and appliquéd her little wings over to keep in place. As a final finishing touch I sewed the ‘click click and cluck cluck’ added a piece of felt over the whole backside and stitched on a cream cotton border before mounting behind card and framing. A unique piece of art 🙂

There, another crazy crafted cloth creation on canvas! Well, at least if kept me quiet for over a day!!

After taking a photograph of the 8” x 6” image without glass, so as to be able to see more detail, I then put back the glass to keep all safe and dust free 🙂

Arrrrgh! That huge pile of cloth is still all over my table though…..Suppose I can always make some more before I tidy up!

Cute crazy craft creations

Sheep knitting

Sheep knitting

With felt and fabric festooned all around I decided to carry on making rather than tidy away after I found some more square fames I had bought in a sale last year. For some reason sheep seemed the obvious choice as the art subject – really can’t explain why, other than I had a collection of my doodles lying around with lots of sheep on them, so I made that my inspiration for creating a fabric collage. Once I had cut all my little bits I tested my own patience by knitting embroidery thread on two wooden tooth picks – it wouldn’t have been so bad if it was single stranded but to knit six ply thread with extra sharp tiny wooden stakes did get a bit testing – eventually I did a little knitted sample of about seven rows, which seemed about the right size for the fluffy sheep.

To start off I frayed one of the fabrics to give a grassy border effect then stitched the green cotton print ”hills” onto the blue cross stitch background material which will also act as the sky. Small offcuts of plastic coated tapestry backing were used to create a little the fence for the sheep to sit on. I then hand sewed the felt sheep pieces in place adding the tiny ‘knitting’ as a finishing touch.

To keep the little fabric picture dust free I placed it into one of the square glazed wooden frames. Then made a couple more!!!

Using up those little bits!

Using up those little bits!

I really do seem to be in sewing overdrive at the moment I am trying to recycle little bits and bobs that many others would have thrown away when they were at least double the size. I really do hoard, though you never know when something might come in handy for a future project (well that’s my excuse) These little wall pictures have been created from tiny left over pieces of felt and hand sewn onto fragments of tapestry backing I had ”lying” about in one of my many ‘save and see’ boxes. I came across a couple of salvaged wooden frames in another ‘save and see’ bag whilst ”””’TIDYING UP”””” Oh My! The tidying up went right out of the window I am now somewhere underneath the most humongous pile of felt offcuts at the moment – even I am feeling the urge to get the hoover tools and suck the mess off the conservatory table, goodness knows what my husband thinks when he comes home each night from work – Thankfully he never says anything about the state of ”’MY work space”’

One day I might have a clear table and empty ‘save and see’ boxes but I won’t hold my breath!

Below are the other colour variations to this theme

Handmade and quilted Giant Christmas Stockings

Handmade and quilted Giant Christmas Stockings

Having got rid of the need to make any more gingerbread guy themed crafty creations. I set about with this pair of giant Christmas stockings, after cutting out all the fabric ready for construction and adding a layer of synthetic wadding, I was ready to start hand quilting over the entire front and back of each one. I added a coordinating cotton fabric hanging loop and hand twisted a cord bow for each front centre.

All they need now is a new owner to fill them year after year, OR, better still, get someone you love to fill them for YOU!  🙂
